QUEEN ANNE TOWNHOUSE.

This fine example of an early eighteenth century townhouse with gauged flat and camber arches had been repointed with inappropriate cement based mortar. We decided to leave these areas unrestored, as the likelyhood of damaging the arrises of the bricks by raking out the hard mortar was high. In addition there was no evidence of damage as yet to the brickwork by the presence of this inappropriate pointing. Thankfully the arches were untouched. However, they were in need of repointing. The client requested that the wisteria growing up the front elevation be pruned back but otherwise left intact.

PRIOR TO RESTORATION:

The arches were carefully raked out and any loose voussoirs reinstated. Any damaged or previously repaired voussoirs were restored. Particular attention was given to the finished width of the tuck 'ribbon' at only 2mm, which gave the arches the finesse they would have originally had.

The fire surround within the house was cleaned and repointed using a hydraulic lime-based mortar with the addition of sharp sand to match the original mix and texture.
